Clocking in for Unpaid Labour

Clocking in for Unpaid Labour
August 22 to 24th

What work do you do without pay? Is it an act of giving? Does it make you frustrated or does it bring you joy?

The Burnaby Arts Council invites you to visit us at Deer Lake Gallery for pop-up exhibit Clocking In for Unpaid Labour Canada.

Timecards record the hourly work done by workers in paid institutions. In many ways they are obsolete today, but artists and community members were welcomed to ponder the work they do without pay. This included work that may be paid but was undervalued and/or underpaid.

Over months of creation and dialogue, artists from seven provinces and one territory contributed over one hundred time cards addressing diverse perspectives. Unpaid or underpaid work is universal, all humans do this work from laundry – to workplace overtime – to caring for an aging parent.

This exhibit showcases the art made on time cards by artists and community members from across Canada. Learn about the history of Labour Day and the many types of work that we do without pay and how that makes us feel.

Join local artists, curators and BAC members Jennie Johnston and Shamina Senaratne to make your own time card at one of two workshops (see below), and enjoy art that addresses unpaid labour alongside the time cards, including the work of Alberta artist Vivian Smith.
