In partnership with Single V Coffee, the Burnaby Arts Council and the Deer Lake Art Gallery are pleased to bring you our second pop-up exhibition!
Peonies is a series of watercolours featuring the titular flower by artist James Araujo-Lawrence. This series was inspired by the beauty and experience of the painting process. The works are best described by Araujo-Lawrence in his artist’s statement below:
The more I paint, the more I try to be present to the experience of creating instead of just anticipating the final product. I find doing the same thing over and over again, such as fading out a colour, can have a meditative effect. Each time I do it I’m more engrossed in the act and experience more satisfaction from it as well as end up with a better product. It’s this ability to be present while painting that I take a lot pride in. Details such as making sure the paint doesn’t bleed through the lines or that intersecting lines meet neatly are hugely important to me. If my mind is elsewhere then I can’t achieve a level of consistency throughout the piece and the result is what I would describe as messy. I particularly enjoy painting peonies as I’m able to practice executing similar brush strokes from piece to piece, but still have creative freedom to make fresh designs that keep me engaged.
James is a self-taught artist from Vancouver, BC who has a love for vibrant colours and clean lines. He would spend his semester breaks from college drawing and painting as a way to pass the time. It was then when an appreciation for watercolours began. After graduation in 2020 he decided to commit more time to art and improving his skills. His designs and colouring are inspired from traditional and neo-traditional tattoo flash as well as bits of psychedelic art.
