The MAMA Project is an exhibition that will be held at the Deer Lake Art Gallery featuring the work of Emily van Lidth de Jeude. Endorsed by the National Committee of UN Women Canada, The MAMA Project is hosted and organized by the Burnaby Arts Council. The Exhibition will open on May 11th and will run until June 3rd, 2017. SuperMAMA, the accompanying multimedia performance of poetry and song, will happen at 6:30 pm, May 13th. The Deer Lake Gallery will also be open from 11am – 5pm on Mothers’ Day, May 14th, and the artist will host a public MAMA Conversation from 3-4pm.
Emily van Lidth de Jeude is a multimedia visual and literary artist living on Bowen Island, in British Columbia.

The MAMA Project is an installation that was conceived by van Lidth de Jeude through the exploration of the relationships we all have with our mothers. The maternal materializes through painted images on raw bed linens and hung like laundry around the space. Broadcast audio recordings of mothers interviewed accompany the installation. Stories are a deep history of birth, death, dreams, and lives lived. The voices move throughout the space as if they are indeed walking among the sheets. Accompanying the exhibit is a hand-bound book where visitors have recorded their own thoughts about mothering. This combination offers a unique experience of the emotional and physical experiences of mothering. Weather permitting, the installation will expand into the gallery’s courtyard. This exhibition toured the Pacific North West from Gibsons and Bowen Island to Victoria and Washington. Burnaby can now be added to the list of cities that has hosted this multifaceted, non-confrontational discovery of motherhood. This exhibit is suitable to all ages.

SuperMAMA is a 50-minute long multi-media performance of songs and poetry about motherhood and being mothered. Artist Emily van Lidth de Jeude will be joined by musician and artist Keona Hammond as well as by her own mother, Lyn van Lidth de Jeude, and her daughter, Rhiannon Raven.

Please join us at the Deer Lake Gallery for SuperMAMA and the OPENING Performance of THE MAMA PROJECT on Saturday May 13th, 6:30 pm.  The Exhibition runs from May 11th to June 3rd.
