Luminescence is an exhibition that will be held at The Deer Lake Gallery featuring the multi-disciplinary work of a large and diverse group of artists. Luminescence is hosted and organized by The Burnaby Arts Council. The Exhibition will open on March 19th and will run until April 9th, 2016. Luminescence celebrates, through human creativity and spirituality, the bright light of the Spring Equinox, which this year is on March 19th.
The March equinox has long been celebrated as a time of rebirth in the Northern Hemisphere. Many cultures celebrate spring festivals and holidays around the March equinox, like Easter and Passover. On March 19th at 9:30 p.m. the sun shines equally on both hemispheres. It is fitting that such an important celestial event be celebrated by the talents of a large and diverse group of artists in as many different media thereby opening a unique poetic vein. Multilayered images are combined in the exhibition in which the fragility and instability of our seemingly certain reality is questioned. Many of the works are based only on subjective associations inciting the viewer to connect and give pause to reflect on light.
“The viewer is left to ponder the blurred boundaries between reality and fantasy, settling on their own interpretation and perhaps questioning everything else they think they see from that point forward.” Grant Withers
Each participating artist will exhibit 1-2 pieces that will explore and celebrate the use of light in its many forms. Some of the work is 3 dimensional and architectural in order to produce aspects of light not normally visible. Materials used by the artists include concrete, wood, metal, industrial paint, mirrors, glass, plaster visualize what light represents to them. Photography is also represented.
This exhibits shows the beauty of light as seen through the eyes of these many talented artists.
Naomi Singer from the Secret Lantern Society will be working on a collective lantern that everyone is invited to participate and work on during the opening. We are also pleased to have the violinist Nicole Scoffield perform for us at the opening of the exhibition. Her credits span from playing with the Orca String Quartet for Queen Elizabeth at Government House during the Commonwealth Games to even fiddling solo on a chuck wagon at Richmond’s Pumpkin Patch
