February 29 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
* Deerlake Gallery Hours: Closed Sunday/Monday and all holidays
Live at the Gallery returns and is kicking of 2020 with a spectacular night of performances! We’re changing things up a little this time around for our February show and you’re definitely not going to want to miss out.
Get inspired by the mesmerizing melodies and sketch while the artists perform! Bring your sketchbooks and pencils (or we will provide some) and do some live figure sketching (or anything else you want!). The purpose of this night is to not only appreciate the talented local artists, but engage everyone in art, in a unique way. Feel free to draw, write, compose, whatever you want to create! Of course, you are welcome to simply enjoy the music too.
The night will feature two contrasting performances beginning with elegant classical harp music provided by Hayley Farenholtz and followed by local rocker Shockk and his set of improvised guitar music: Interior Design.
Join us for this amazing free event at the Deer Lake Art Gallery. We’ll see you there!
6:30 pm – Doors open
7:00 pm – opening remarks, performance begins
Award-winning harpist Hayley Farenholtz is completing a dual degree in Music Performance and Music Education at the University of BC. She is trained in both the classical pedal harp and the Celtic lever harp. She is also an accomplished pianist.
Hayley is a four-time winner of the Royal Conservatory of Music Gold Medal for harp and she has received several awards and scholarships for music and performance, including the District 68 Dogwood Award, the D C & H L Knigge Entrance Scholarship in Music and the Norah Mansell Music Scholarship.
Hayley has performed with the UBC Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, the West Coast Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra and the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra both as an ensemble member and as a soloist.
ROB (SHOCKK) MATHARU has played lead guitar in many punk rock bands for over fifteen years, touring Canada, USA and Japan. In addition to his collaborative projects, he teaches, composes experimental music and captures railway tracks, trains and empty industrial sites at night, meandering through the city with his camera.
Interior Design is a project by guitarist/composer Shockk Mongoose in which ambient sounds, night photography and music combine to create a series of darkly lyrical tonal landscapes. Deploying subtly detailed beats and effects with fretboard technique, bursts of color with rich drones and Reichian loops, Shockk’s music locates a still point in the listener’s mind; it’s a headphone trip in an unknown part of the city with an unobtrusive companion.
