Group exhibition featuring: Irma Soltonovich and Jenn Williamson
Capturing the Essence is an exhibition that will be held at The Deer Lake Gallery featuring the abstract paintings of Jenn Williamson and Irma Soltonovich. Capturing the Essence is hosted and organized by The Burnaby Arts Council. The Exhibition will open on May 14th and will run until June 4th, 2016.
In Capturing the Essence it becomes evident that there is a commonality between the two artists; they paint interior landscapes. In fact they work to capture the real of the mood that is conjured by landscape. Soltonovich, growing up on a Saskatchewan farm became aware of the vastness of moods that the sky can evoke. Living in BC she added the fascination of the sea to her palette making the line a dominant factor in her art. She contests the division between the realm of memory and the realm of experience; she investigates the dynamics of landscape. Rather than presenting a factual reality, an illusion is fabricated to conjure the realms of our imagination. With degrees in art and art education, she returned to painting in 2002 and is now a full time artist.
Williamson, in contrast has always lived in BC, and although her work is intuitive, the horizon is an element that she has in common with Soltonovich. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural views, Williamson develops forms that do not follow logical criteria, but are based only on her subjective associations and formal parallels, which incite the viewer to make new personal associations. Her works establish a link between the landscape’s reality and that which is imagined by its conceiver. By choosing mainly unconventional solutions, she tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations. Williamson, born in White Rock, now resides in the Fraser Valley with her husband and two boys.
These two seasoned artists have created a compelling narrative on the convergence of the plains of our environment. Please join us for the opening reception of Capturing the Essence that will be held May 14th, 2016 between 2-4pm at the Deer Lake Gallery.
