President's Letter
A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD
Thanks to all who took the time out of their busy schedules to attend this year’s AGM, held on June 11 at the Burnaby Arts Council’s beautiful Deer Lake Gallery. After the business was completed, the newly elected board enjoyed the time and opportunity to network with members while savouring the lovely refreshments coordinated by Rose Farina.
We bid a fond farewell and many thanks for the time devoted to benefit Burnaby’s artistic community to Bill Zeng and Markus Schmidt who are giving up their directorships to allow themselves more time to concentrate on other pursuits. It was also announced that Nancy Gobis, a long-time director and champion of the arts has been awarded a life-time Honorary membership in the BAC.
We are pleased that Frank Mesich, a former executive member will once again be adding his energy, expertise and experience to Board activities. His
new position as Treasurer is a welcome addition to the Burnaby Arts Council. A warm welcome is also extended to newly elected directors, Katie Tong and Barbara Kyle who show promise of bringing renewed vigour, fresh perspectives, and new ideas to the organization.
This year’s Operating Grants to Member Groups was increased by approximately $5,000, and $300 Arts scholarships were awarded to students from each of the 9 secondary schools in Burnaby. The Burnaby Art Council will be busy over the summer with its Student Summer Theatre, the Artist Studio Tour, regularly scheduled Art Exhibitions, formalizing the 2008-09 Deer Lake Gallery exhibition schedule, its summer board meeting in conjunction with one of the Deer Lake Park outdoor concerts , and preparing the annual Operating Grant presentation to the City before continuing with our busy fall programs.
Your Burnaby Arts Council Board of Directors wish you all a wonderful summer holiday!!
Sincerely, Harriet Tuey
